International Tongue Twister Day at ACS
By Maya Boneva-Nikolova
On November 13, our school celebrated International Tongue Twister Day with an exciting event organized by the Foreign Language Department that showcased the linguistic talent and skill of our students! ACSers from grades 9-12 gathered in the Concert Hall during Consultation for a lively, multilingual tongue twister competition in German, Spanish, and French.
The energy was high as participants twisted and turned their tongues, competing for the top spots and the chance to win certificates and graded reader books as prizes and the hearts of the audience. The enthusiastic audience cheered their classmates on, making it a memorable event.
The few brave German language students had to try and say “Zehn zahme Ziegen zogen zehn Zentner Zucker zum Zoo.” as quickly and flawlessly as possible. (Roughly translated: Ten tame goats were pulling ten kilograms of sugar towards the zoo.)
The more than a dozen French language student participants impressed saying “As-tu su si c’est ici que se situe l’issue de l’usine? (Roughly translated: Do you know that the exit of the factory is here?)
The largest number of students, over 20, competed in Spanish with this tongue twister, “A Cuesta le cuesta subir la cuesta, y en medio de la cuesta, Cuesta va y se acuesta.” (Roughly translated: Cuesta (name) has a hard time climbing the hill and lies down half way.)
Congratulations to all who participated—you made this day a true celebration of language and joy! A special shoutout to our winners—your dedication and flair for languages truly shone through. Another shoutout to these teachers who in an attempt to inspire students recorded themselves twisting their tongue in six different languages. Did you guess all six? Either way, we look forward to more events that celebrate our students' love of language!
