The American College of Sofia Started the New School Year with Block Olympics
On the morning of September 15, students, teachers, and parents gathered together to mark and celebrate the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.
Derek Tellis, Dean of Students, welcomed the students from the stage of the Whitaker Auditorium. He was followed by our new President, Dr. Paul Johnson, who introduced himself and the new faculty members. The audience warmly applauded the new President and teachers, as well as the newly accepted students from the Class of 2015 who successfully passed the admission exam in March and today were introduced into the ACS community.
After the traditional all-school photo in front of Ostrander Hall, the Blocks were introduced to the school in a parade in front of the Bubble. The exciting surprise of the day was the new flags for each Block, donated by our former President, Mr. Thomas Cangiano. On behalf of all ACS students, thank you Mr. Cangiano, and good luck for the new school year!
After the flags were received by the Block leaders and student representatives, the Black Cup was presented to the winner of last year’s competition. The Falcons, with Block Leader Ms. Nevena Kalpakova, were the winners of the Black Cup competition for the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations!
The sunny day continued with the Block Olympics, where students competed in several different games: Name Game, Hoola-Hoop Race, Three-Legged Race, Potato Sack Race, Water Balloon Toss, and Tug-of-War. The winners of today’s Olympics were Magma in first place, Golden Lions in second place, and Falcons in third place. The prep class also deserves recognition for their enthusiasm and energy throughout the day’s activities. All students enjoyed the festivities and especially the perfect summer weather. It was a day of warm welcome for all ACS students.
