Silver Medal from EUSO

ACS junior Ivana Andreeva won a silver medal at the European Union Science Olympiad (EUSO). EUSO is an interdisciplinary competition, where Bulgaria is represented by two teams, each of which has one biologist, one chemist, and one physicist. Ivana became a member of the national EUSO team after receiving an excellent grade at the national Chemistry Olympiad.

We asked Ivana to tell us more about the format of Olympiad and how she prepared for it. Here is what she shared: “My chemistry teachers Ms. Praznikova and Ms. Kalpakova did Titration and Thin layer chromatography with me, as I was unable to attend the official preparation due to a family trip. This was my first time at EUSO. There are two tasks, which are performed on two separate days. Each of them has a big problem, the solution to which is sought by each of the team members in a unique way. Our first task was to determine whether a power station should be built near Klagenfurt. I had to analyze the chromate concentration in the soil and determine whether it compares with the values allowed by the Austrian government. As a team we worked very well.”
We congratulate Ivana on her great achievement!
