ACSers Raise Money for Puerto Rico (and Bulgaria)
It was Laurel Zmolek-Smith, 8th Grade English teacher and passionate activist, who came up with the idea to hold a competition among sections and raise money for Puerto Rico after the island was struck by hurricane Maria in September. Many fellow ACSers, teachers and students, embraced the idea right away and on October 17, advisory groups discussed ways of doing charity and service, researched news about Puerto Rico together, and sought local charities to support in addition to the UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery they planned to trust with their Puerto Rico gift.
The challenge is on October 18-20 and the section that wins by collecting the most money will have their Puerto Rico money matched by Ms. Zmolek-Smith, so they can donate it to a Bulgarian charity of their choice.
As Khalil Gibran once said, “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the greatest intention,” so feel free to follow the example of our kind 8th grade teacher and student souls and pay it forward.
Some sections give home-made cookies or cute hand-written well-wishes to donors.
