Are you considering taking a university course in English? Whether you are applying for undergraduate study or returning to university for a Masters, this course aims to prepare you for high-level study in English. Run by a native English speaker who has years of experience at the University of London, this course will cover a wide range of topics including: academic terminology and vocabulary, presenting in English at an advanced level, and critical reading and writing. 

The course materials will include guidance on ‘academic skills’ from top universities and academic articles published in world-renowned journals. The themes of these materials will be bespoke depending on the interests of the participants. 

Course Content 

  1. Presenting in English at Undergraduate or Postgraduate level 
  2. Expressing your opinions in a university seminar 
  3. Critical reading and writing
  4. Academic terminologies and vocabulary 
  5. Reading and notetaking strategies (academic texts and lectures)
  6. Comparing and contrasting academic texts 
  7. Literature reviews and annotated bibliographies
  8. Using examples to structure applications and essays 
  9. Academic style (including discussing the passive voice and its use in modern academic writing) 
  10. Research strategies 
  11. Time management strategies for academic study 

The course will simulate an academic setting through mock seminars and essays. The themes of the classes and academic reading/writing will be decided depending on the interests of the students. 

Who is this course for?

  • Adults (18+) who want to study in English at Undergraduate or Postgraduate level, Bulgarian University lecturers who want to teach in English or are often invited as guest speakers at academic conferences abroad 

Minimum Level of English Required
This course is suitable for adults fluent in English. The minimum level required is B2

Course Duration
32 academic hours in 16 sessions
The course starts on January 18, 2023, and will continue until May 17, 2023.

The classes of the current group are held once a week at the American College of Sofia on Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 7:20 pm. The course is going to take place online in case the Bulgarian authorities prohibit classes in person due to the COVID pandemic.
