SPECIAL PRESENTATION OF “IROQUOIS HISTORY, ART, AND CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS”
Peter Jones, a potter and sculptor from the Beaver Clan, Onondaga Nation spoke to our students on the afternoon of Thursday, November 18, 2010.
Peter’s work is in the collections of many museums in the United States and Europe. He came to ACS to talk to the students about Iroquois history, art, and contemporary ceramics. He began by showing photographs of the reservation where he currently lives, explaining some of the economic and political perspectives from his community.
Next he showed photographs of his pottery, which ranged from traditional Seneca pottery (that looks similar to Thracian works found in this region), to using traditional methods to create contemporary sculptures that are social commentary on Native Americans and their lives today.
He answered many questions from the students about his background as a Native American and as an artist.
The event was organized by the American Embassy.
