One Step Ahead: Introducing Young Talents to the World of Work
By Eren Aksoy '25
On March 8, the American College of Sofia hosted its first-ever internship fair, One Step Ahead: an initiative led by ACS Seniors Eren Aksoy, Konstantin Boyadzhiev, Kaloyan Rupchin, Maria Shivikova, and Yoana Troeva. Organized as part of their Senior Independent Honors Project, the fair aimed to bridge the gap between education and professional experience, helping students navigate their future career paths and plan ahead more effectively.
The event brought together representatives from 13 leading companies and organizations, offering students direct access to internship opportunities across a wide range of industries – from finance and engineering to design and neuroscience. Among the companies participating were KPMG, UBB, Trading 212, CBT, C Team, Endurosat, Tuk-Tam, Kolev & Kolev, Ina Assa, Lys, UG Market, Hlebarov, and Sofiyska Voda. Each company hosted a booth where students could engage in one-on-one conversations with company representatives, gaining insights into the application process, workplace expectations, and CV structure. Several of the firms also held presentations, offering practical tips on landing a job in the industry and showcasing their unique company cultures.
One of the participants, Lyudmila Kaneva, a future Cornell University student, emphasized the value of in-person networking. “Connections in person are very important when trying to get ahead,” she shared. “LinkedIn is sometimes not enough; when you’re kind and genuine in a conversation, you form connections that can help not only with internships but also in building your career."
One Step Ahead wasn’t just about professional networking—it was about creating an experience that made the professional world feel accessible. Thanks to CBT, an alumni-founded company whose financial support was crucial to the event’s success, the fair came to life. Their commitment to giving back to ACS, along with additional sponsors like Coca-Cola Group, Roobar, and Prestige, ensured smooth organization, catering, and gift bags for all participants. The event was further supported by the ACS Career Club as well as many student volunteers, who helped manage logistics, set up the venue, and guide participants throughout the day.
With over 100 participants, the fair was a great success. Many students left with internship offers, new connections, and a clearer understanding of their professional paths. Whether it was securing an opportunity, meeting new people, or learning what to expect from the working world, everyone left one step ahead of where they started.
As ACS’s first event of its kind, the One Step Ahead Internship Fair exceeded expectations and set a high standard for future career fairs. It showed what seniors can achieve with a shared vision and purpose.
