ACS Hosts 2019 Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee Finals
On Sunday, April 21st, between 10:30 AM and 3 PM the American College of Sofia will host the 2019 Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee Finals. Spelling Bee is a traditional American competition where participants spell words in the English language. Spelling Bees aim to prompt student interest towards learning English and to improve their knowledge through fun and interactive activities. Additionally, in the process of preparing for the different rounds, students learn to work together as a team and create relationships of understanding, friendship, and mutual help with their peers.
The Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee is a competition open to students aged 9-14 and takes place in three rounds. From February 22 to March 1, over 6500 students from 297 schools across the country took part in the school round. Open to the top two students in each School round, ten regional rounds took place on March 23rd & 24th in Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, Blagoevgrad, Sliven, Razgrad, Montana, and Varna. The top three students from each Regional round will compete at the Final round on Sunday at ACS.
The Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee is organized by CORPluS Foundation, the America for Bulgaria Foundation, the United States Embassy, British Council, AVO Language & Examination Center, and the Ministry of Education and Sciences.
During the opening ceremony at 10:30 AM on Sunday, in The Whitaker Auditorium, the ACS Choir will congratulate and wish the best of luck to all competitors and their teachers with a musical surprise. The closing and awarding ceremony is scheduled for about 2 PM. All are welcome!
