ACS Girls Reach the Final at the City Football Championship
By Veselina Tepeshanova, ACS Girls Football Coach
On March 8, ACS girl footballers (Grades 8-10) from the school’s representative team took part in Round 4 of the City Football Championship for Girls organized by the Bulgarian Football Union. And they made it to the final!
At the City Championship, ACS competed alongside five teams: Food Technology Vocational High School, School #119, School #144, School #19, and High School for Fashion Design and Textile.
Representing ACS were team members Bailey Smith (goalkeeper), Evgenia Velkova (captain), Yana Nikolova, Ina Ilieva, Katrin Nikolova, and Simona Delibaltova.
In their first game, our girls beat the Food Technology Vocational High School 2:0, Victoria Petrova and Katrin Nikolova scoring.
In their second match in the group against School #119 our girls had no problems either and with two goals by Simona Delibaltova, the ACS footballers ranked first in Group A, thus making it to the final where they were to mret the Group B winners - the team of the High School for Fashion Design and Textile.
The final was very close indeed, with many goal attempts by both teams. ACS goalkeeper Bailey Smith parried all attacks to our goal, but with just two minutes left to play, she was alone against two opponent forwards and couldn’t ward this attack off. In the remaining minutes our girls fought hard but could not score. Fatigue was also a factor as we had no substitute players at hand. This way, with a minimum loss of 0:1 in the final game, our girls finished second.
