To Members of the ACS Community:

As many of you know, last week the American College of Sofia was inspected by a visiting team of distinguished international educators as part of the process of re-accreditation. Accreditation is a voluntary process by which schools agree to submit to review by education experts -- an internationally respected guarantee that assures universities and employers that we are providing a safe and high-quality education for all of our students.
Over the past year, members of the American College of Sofia community have been working to prepare a comprehensive self-study as part of our normal re-accreditation with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. On October 21-24, a team of experts from MSA will conduct an inspection visit to verify the quality of both the College’s programs and its goals for improvement over the next seven years.
I am pleased to announce that the next President of the American College of Sofia will be Richard (Dick) Ewing. Dr. Ewing will assume the presidency on July 1, 2015 upon the retirement of our current President. Dr. Paul Johnson gave the Board of Trustees notice during the last school year that he intended to retire on June 30, 2015, after a 40 year career in education in the US and abroad. Paul has shared that he and his wife, Teresa Monicken, consider their time at ACS and in Bulgaria one the most rewarding experiences they’ve ever had.

Six ACS students from eighth and tenth grade competed in a speech and interpretation tournament last weekend at the American University in Blagoevgrad. At this tournament there were only two events: Duo Interpretation and Original Oratory. In both events, a scholarship to send the winners to the United States to compete in the National Speech and Debate Association’s National tournament this summer beckoned contestants to work tremendously hard.
On February 27, 2015 ACS students participated in a demonstration of the sport of lacrosse. Originally created by Native Americans--according to some records the game dates back to the 15th century--lacrosse is played with 2 teams carrying wooden sticks with nets on the end. A ball is passed between teammates' sticks as they try to move the ball toward the opponents' goal. If a player shoots a ball from the net in their stick into the goal they score a point.
On March 21 the World of Fashion and PR Club at the American College of Sofia organized a charitable review-spectacle called “The Art of Giving” for the second year in a row. The event took place in Paradise Center. Last year the club fundraised 3,500 leva for the renovation of the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Oncology in Sofia. This year’s fashion show fundraised 6,500 leva that will be donated to The School Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (SIMI) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).
