His original connections to the school came through Dr. Floyd H. Black, whom he met in graduate school and H. H. Bliss, his wife’s father, who taught English at ACS from 1938 to 1942.

Occupation & Employer: Walters is recently retired from higher education administration. After a stint as a deanlet at Ohio State, he worked at two state-level agencies, initially as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research at the Ohio Board of Regents, and subsequently as Executive Director of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. Also, Walters is a long-time editor of Balkanistica, a multidisciplinary scholarly journal covering the countries of Southeastern Europe.
Reason for Service on Board: Walters did dissertation research in Romania. While living there he traveled to Bulgaria and fell in love with the country. He later studied the language. Walters enthusiastically accepted the invitation by Roger Whitaker to join the Board and is eager to help ACS.

Reason for Service on the Board: Ms. Ries was U.S. Ambassador to Bulgaria from 2012-2015. During her tenure, the U.S. and Bulgaria concluded a strategic partnership agreement incorporating cooperation in many areas. Ms. Ries is committed to continuing to deepen the bilateral relationship and to supporting quality education for Bulgarian students via service on the Board.
